2010 Jul 15, Update: WUBI (-the single file download) just isn't available for Ubuntu 10.10 (now at Alpha 2) yet, just in case you need to know. Anyhow, for anyone who is a Linux noobie testing out WUBI, not what you want can be an Alpha/Beta version, so stay with Ubuntu 10.04. You can, however, install using WUBI Ubuntu 10.04 (Karmic Koala) and after that upgrade to Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick Meerkat). ;)
Note: This is written for Ubuntu 10.04 and above, namely Ubuntu 10.04, 10.10, 11.04, etc... It will also benefit earlier versions, where WUBI is protected, but why would you need to do that? Get the modern version! -_-

Installing Ubuntu on the Windows partition implies that you are performing an install of Ubuntu by using an existing Windows partiton compared to installing one on the new Linux partition that is more difficult and risky to perform. It's a case ones one is safer for any Linux newbie. ;)
On a technical knowhow needed of just one to 5, with 1 being the best and 5 being construction, this has to be a 1, as all you have to perform is to click. No need terminal commands, as was the way it is in the past.
If Linux has put you off from because you previously failed miserably installing or configuring it, consider it again now with new eyes. ;)

What is WUBI?
WUBI means "Windows-based Ubuntu Installer" and comes standard within the Ubuntu Desktop CD.
System Requirements:
OS: Windows 7/Vista/XP/2000/98
Memory: 256 MB
Hdd Space: 5 GB available
WUBI Installs the Ubuntu file system to "c:ubuntudisksroot.disk",
and a swap file to "c:ubuntudisksswap.disk".
These are virtual containers therefore you don't get to determine the inside on the containers which can be a great thing as they won't ruin your Windows file system.
The pitfall with using WUBI instead of a real Linux filesystem over a separate partition is the fact that Hibernation is NOT supported. I think of the as NOT YET so I will not be too concerned with it. By the time you obtain used to Ubuntu and Linux, hopefully, someone may have perfected the Hibernation part. If it's a large issue in your case, you could install Ubuntu in the own partition later.
Another limitation you have to bear in mind, for anybody who is unable to boot it down one day is - Ubuntu is configured to be a container file (root.disk) in Windows, so if at some point it happens that that file is "unclean" being a result of a tough shutdown (ie Windows crashed and burned!), you should have it to give Windows disk checking (chkdsk) before it may boot up as the file has become corrupted in Windows NOT Linux. That means there's two layers of disk checking you
should be familiar with.

Method 1: WUBI CD install:
Note: Though this short article was originally written for the earlier version of Ubuntu, it really works the same for Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick Meerkat) too, as everything remained exactly the same.
1. Start by about to Ubuntu's download page and decide on which version you wish:
For ordinary users and Linux newbies, you'll want to possess the Desktop version, it's simpler to use. Method 2: WUBI single file web installer (WUBI.exe):
Note: WUBI installer will not seem to get updated yet, even with Ubuntu 10.10 is officially released. Use the other method. :(
After having one of these published, a straight easier way is here to my attention; instead of having the CD with WUBI inside it, you download the WUBI installer, that can then download Ubuntu for you then install everything in your case without burning the CD. A 1-step method, when you will.
The website is: http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/windows-installer plus it still has only WUBI 10.04, NOT WUBI 10.10 the very last time I checked. If you followed the url, downloaded and upon installation, still see 10.04, try Method 1 instead. :(
Which strategy to follow?
If you'll need to possess the CD (for multiple installations, or run in demo mode - to merely look and discover whether Ubuntu is available for you), keep to the main article's method. Assuming that you simply have got everything right, try checking your disk drive for errors (-happened if you ask me!). Also, install to C: drive, not D: drive or some other drives.
Other than that, I can't allow you to much but encourage one to search Google for: ubuntu no boot up menu / ubuntu no boot up loader.
You might additionally want to try reinstalling Ubuntu.

I've installed ubuntu 10.40 (win part.), everything went smoothly but after reboot there isn't a bios selection for win/ubuntu, then win xp starts as normal. Any idea why? Please help!!:)
Not certain that I understand you correctly, but Ubuntu runs better in their own partition in ext4 compared with WUBI (ntfs), certainly.
And if, with the words "disk reformance", you might be referring towards the disk errors during installation, they're not a problem anymore, those are from some early alpha versions I encountered, I think. ;)
If you're good in IT/software, go on and try ext4, otherwise better to stick with WUBI and have familiar with Ubuntu. :)

Please ignore my earlier post! I was able to setup (Windows Install) Ubuntu finally. I placed the iso file (not the files on cds after burning the iso file) and also the wubi.exe downloaded from windows installer within a folder. This wubi file is 1.4 (1.39) mb, whereas the wubi file about the live cd (which you will get after burning the iso file) is 1.43 mb. And it worked!

The dimension is different probably since the wubi.exe on the website remains to be WUBI 10.04 NOT 10.10. Use the WUBI through the CD instead as it truly is meant for 10.10.

If I can try and clarify...
I ought to keep windows and ubuntu in this little pc.
As I understand it (and also this may be where I'm going wrong...) the harddrive will split its resources between your two, effectively halving it.
If that's the situation, then I do not require much memory given over to your windows side, which enables it to save it for your ubuntu side.
I'm very happy to take whatever is certainly going though, provided that I can still use both.
The challenge with my installing 10.10 was it didn't i want to keep both, and simply offered the entire reformatting.
However, will you be suggesting that this links above will just upgrade the ubuntu, whilst keeping the existing partitions because they stand? If that may be so, the idea sounds like the answer!
My main pc is my studio, so I can't can get on till tomorrow. I can take a look at the direct upgrade then.

Hello there. I'm about as nooby as nooby is usually with these things, but I HAVE installed ubuntu 10.10 on my small laptop, and yes it's great :)
Now I would like to upgrade the 10.04 in this little desktop to 10.10, but desire to keep a Windows partition as my image software programs are, alas, all pc based.
I just use Windows cell phone my dreamweaver and photoshop.
When I installed 10.10 in this little laptop, it provided me 3 partion option, one which often was setting it up alongside another OS. (this can be a option I want) But installation for the desk top only allows me to erase and reformat the main drive (maybe much later) or partition manually. The manual option loses me completely I'm afraid, and I need an idiots secrets and techniques for set this partition. I exclusively use Windows now let's talk about my dreamweaver and photoshop. Everything else is ubuntu side.
Please help an, but 2 week old ubuntu baby :)

Did you restart your PC by it? If so, you should get to Windows and run from that point. Also, you will want to uninstall any previous Ubuntu WUBI you might have - WUBI will prompt you with this.

Try google for "Ubuntu/Linux + + problems", etc. If nothing appears, odds are there is problems with your installation, not the motive force.
Assuming that your particular wireless card is often a well known one, try conducting a fresh install and find out whether you possess the same problem.
Also be aware that on some notebooks, like mine, wireless is on automatically (unlike Windows, where you ought to turn it on that has a button) but minus the wireless LED due to being on.
Beyond these, I can't offer much help, I am afraid. -_-

For heavens sake, can there be no simple means to fix getting wireless using WUBI Ubuntu? Seriously Ive wasted almost a complete day just trying to seek out the best strategy to getting my wireless card for being detected by scanning forum after forum, but thus far nothing.
I did install ndiswrapper however cant chose the .inf file needed to detect it. Frustratingly, I can only assume my wireless is incompatible, but when thats the way it is how was I capable to use Ubuntu within the virtualbox and find wireless internet no worries, one problem being the entire speed.

I use Vmware as an alternative to Dual booting windows and Linux. There will probably be no condition in dual booting windows and Ubuntu. Unlike some Linux distributions you do not find problems running Linux along Windows because Ubuntu also made its os windows friendsly. Still i exploit Vmware where i run Unix servers, Linux desktops and servers and windows servers and also the guest os's running on Vmware can operate the network resources in the host operating-system (where Vmware is installed like you installed Vmware on Linux, then Linux becomes host system)or you are able to dedicate a network card into a guest computer running in Vmware. Its a very good thing you'll be able to learn more on installing various os's under Vmware around my blog.

I get download ubuntu-10.04-beta2 desktop version and incredibly work well personally. It is quite good to obtain ubuntu to your daily computer work. It is very nice information and extremely great hub.

Wow, Its really a very nice information. I have found out about ubunto but didn't installed. but soon i will handle the installation. Its so simple and easy to set up.

-Not all programs develop WINE. But maybe you've tried keying from the particular program and Ubuntu into Google and find out if others have went about getting it to operate?
-Not sure what we mean by internet dongle. ADSL/Broadband modem? Anyhow, you are able to try keying within the model number of this dongle in addition to Ubuntu in Google and hope with the best.

ya... but why not consider things such as window based applications.. my internet dongle doesnt support ubuntu... cleaning it once a winehq..although doenst work.. any suggestions...

I downloaded Ubuntu 10.04 with Wubi directly in the internet. So far I am fairly happy by using it. First of all, I am getting reduce buggy, virus and trojan-laden Windows and kissing Bill Gates good-bye (I hate his policies) and also you receive tons of free software for Linux! You can use a great deal of your Windows programs on Linus with WINE. It is fast, dependable, no security problems. There is often a learning curve of an couple of days while you obtain used for the new filing and installation systems. And you will need to spend several days looking throughout the Ubuntu software center to hook yourself up with the many programs you would like.
For those who find themselves scared to look at step: Don't be. If you install Linux Ubuntu how I did, with Wubi, your Windows installation will NOT be affected. When you start increase computer, you'll be able to select which operating system you need, whether Windows or Ubuntu. So it is possible to keep your Windows instead of lose it! If you don't as if it, you can uninstall it from Windows. But I think you will enjoy it. Ubuntu may be the only Linux OS right now you can download directly through Wubi. I are already playing with penguins for a time and I never have got bitten yet :-) I do know an associate who installed linux over their windows partition by chance once, ouch! Great hub and thanks to the free laughs!

If you've not do so, just have the Desktop CD and play by it - it is a Live CD - meaning it is possible to run the OS away from the CD without installing anything. Play with the cute penguin until you're sure that they can don't bite. ;)
You would must select the option "Demo and full installation" as depicted in one of several pictures above.

The more I read, the longer I am gonna wait to setup ubuntu. Some issues remind me of windows XP.
Win7 is fine thus far, but I do like the idea all of which will change at some point inside the future.

I feel your pain, Albertde. While I would not have your problem, I have wireless stability issues, esp after my computer wakes up from suspend mode.
On the plus side, with each passing moment, someone will definitely come on top of whatever is required to get your device to operate. You just have to watch for it! ;)

Wubi unfortunately doesn't solve my problem: I want a Linux wireless connection using my Windows hardware. I know that Linux doesn't support my USB dongle, despite having ndiswrapper.
